Curriculum intent

The media plays an increasingly significant role in our daily lives. We are constantly shown other people’s representations of the world, and it is important that we are equipped to respond to this. It is our intention that our learners are given the tools necessary to be able to be critical in their analysis of the media, and the world, surrounding them.

The media is something we encounter in our everyday lives and is embodied in the technology that we are constantly surrounded by. It is the quickest and most effective way to communicate with large audiences and has an enormous impact on our understanding of the world.

The media encompasses newspapers, magazines, television, film, radio, the internet, advertising, video games and music.

At Carlton le Willows we offer students the chance to choose Media Studies as an option at Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5.

KS4

At Key Stage 4 we offer students the opportunity to take Media Studies as an option subject from Year 10. We offer the EDUQAS GCSE Media Studies course which comprises of three units. One of those units is a controlled assessment and two are examination units. Component 1 is called Exploring the Media and there 12 possible set texts students can be assessed on. In Component 2 they look at specific forms of Media, and they explore it in more depth, and the final Component 3 is the non-examined assessment, working with a brief that the exam board sets.

KS5

At Key Stage 5 we offer the EDUQAS A-Level Media Studies course so the transition from GCSE to A-Level is seamless. It works with the same layout of three component parts. Component 1 is exploring a possible 17 Set products and analysing them in relation to media language, representations and their industries and audiences. Component 2 is looking at some Media products in depth. The final component is the non-examined assessment that is set by the exam board via a brief.
