Curriculum intent
Our intention is to empower students’ love for music, drama and performing, encouraging creativity, critical thinking and collaboration. Students achieve this through the study of a diverse range of topics and skills across music and drama.
Through study in performing arts students will build resilience and independence allowing them to become confident members of society and the performing arts industry.
Our Music curriculum gives students the opportunity to:
- Recognise the features of different musical genres.
- Gain confidence in their performances.
- Creatively compose music in various styles and structures.
- Respect and consider the opinions of others.
- Take pride in their own and others’ creative work.
- Collaborate with peers to solve challenges.
- Provide support and respect during performances.
- Use a variety of musical instruments.
- Engage fully in the music-making process.
KS3
Year 7 music introduces the elements of music, keyboard skills and ensemble performing, allowing students to build a foundation of understanding for future units in performance and composition. In Year 8 students are introduced to the ukulele and chord structure, as well as further practice in both solo and ensemble work, at the end of Year 8 students are introduced to composition. In Year 9 students build an understanding of different musical genres through the exploration of blues, leading into a performance unit where students are given the opportunity to hone their performance skills. Students end Year 9 with a song writing unit further developing their compositional understanding.
KS4
Students opting to take Music as an option in Key Stage 4 will sit Eduqas GCSE Music. The course contains three core components: Component 1 Performing, Component 2 Composition and Component 3 Appraising. All three units explore four areas of study:

KS5
At Key Stage 5 Sixth Formers studying A Level equivalent- RSL Music Practitioners Subsidiary Diploma Level 3. The course consists of a number of units, from Session Studio experience to Live Performing, Audition Skills, event management and Instrumental Skills Development. There are two core (compulsory) units – Planning a Career in Music and Live Musical Performance Skills, which is marked externally by an examiner. All other units are marked internally and grades moderated by the exam board.
INSTRUMENTAL TUITION
We offer individual and group tuition for guitar,, singing, viola, violin, piano and drums. Lesson costs are subsidised by the school and cost £75 per term for a 20 minute lesson, payable on the MCAS app. (Students in receipt of free school meals and other qualifying students may be entitled to free instrumental lessons as well).
